Practice test for MCSE Exam 70-215 Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server:
A. Installing Windows 2000 Server

3. You are a system administrator for a company called IT Exams Ltd. that has 500 Windows 2000 Professional computers and 2 Windows 2000 Server computers. One of the servers is configured as a domain controller for the domain named itexams.co.uk. Currently, all computers are connected to the Internet via a proxy server in your network. Recently, your company employs a technical support named John to help you rolling out 5 member servers to the network. When John tried to update the system files using the Windows Update, he received an error message indicated that he lacks of access permission to perform that operation. What should you do to ensure that John could update the system files in the server?

A. Assigns John to the Domain Admins Group
B. Assigns John to the Local Administrators Group
C. Assigns John to the Enterprise Admins Group
D. Assigns John to the Windows Update Group

To update the system files using the Windows Update, it is essential that you either logging on to a Windows 2000 Server as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group. For this case, it is obvious that John does not have the administrator privileges. To answer this question, you must decide which administrator group should be assigned to John so that the security of your network will not be compromised yet John still can perform the update. If you Assigned John to Domain Administrator or Enterprise Administrator Group, the problem may be resolved, however, John will then obtain the domain and active directory forest level administrator privileges. Because of that, we should assign John to Local Administrator Group only so that he will only have the administrator rights on a particular server. There is no such thing called Windows Update Group, hence D is incorrect.

Further information from Microsoft documentation:
=====================================================================================
The Domain Admins group can represent the users who have broad administrative rights in a domain. Windows 2000 Server does not place any accounts in this group automatically, but if you want an account to have sweeping administrative rights in a domain (and possibly other domains), you can put that account into Domain Admins. Because Windows 2000 Server supports delegation of authority, you should not have to grant these broad administrative rights to many users.

4. You are a system administrator for a company called IT Exams Ltd. that has 500 Windows 2000 Professional computers and 2 Windows 2000 Server computers. All computers are currently connected to the Internet via a proxy server in your network. To keep your system files up to date, you have decided to use the Windows Update to update the servers. What should you do if you want to be notified of the availability of the new critical update from Microsoft whenever you logon to the Windows using administrator account?

A. Configure your Windows 2000 to run a script that contains the SFC command to check for new system files.
B. Configure your Windows 2000 to start Windows Update each times your system starts.
C. Install Windows Update to your Windows 2000.
D. Check the Select Windows Critical Update Notification checkbox when you use the Windows Update.

Windows update is the online extension of Windows 2000 that allows administrator to update the outdated system files easily by checking the latest available system files via a web site provided by Microsoft. To access to that web site, click the start button, then click the Windows Update Menu item which is normally located on top of the start menu. If you want to be notified whenever a new critical update is available for your Windows 2000 from Microsoft Web site, you can install the Windows Critical Update Notification to your Windows 2000. To install this program, you have to select Windows Critical Update Notification when you use the Windows Update. Logging on as an administrator is required both to install the program and to be notified by that program about the new updates. System File Checker (sfc.exe) is a command line utility that scans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer. If System File Checker discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder, and then replaces the incorrect file with the original file. This, however will not update your system files to the most current version as it will only copy the correct version of the files from your local directory hence B is not the answer. Starting Windows Update each times your system started is not a good answer, as you will spend your time checking the update manually, which can be done automatically. Windows Update menu is installed to your Windows 2000 by default, hence you do not need to install it again and installing it doesn't mean you will get notified when critical update is available.

13. You have a computer comes with a 30GB hard disk and other hardware that meets Windows 2000 minimum requirements. You want to install Windows 2000 Server to that computer via network installation, what should you do before you start the installation if you only want to have a single partition at the end of the installation.

A. Create a NTFS partition with the size of 30GB using fdisk.exe.
B. Create a FAT32 partition with the size of 30 GB using fdisk.exe.
C. Create a FAT16 partition with the size of 30 GB using fdisk.exe.
D. Create a HPFS partition with the size of 30 GB using fdisk.exe.

Windows 2000 Server across the network installation requires that a FAT partition be created before the installation so that some installation files can be copied from the server to the local computer. For FAT16, the maximum size can be created for a partition is only 4GB hence C is an incorrect answer. NTFS partition cannot be created prior to the installation, hence A is an incorrect answer as well. Windows 2000 does not support HPFS. To achieve the above requirement, You should create a single FAT32 partition prior to the installation. This can be done as Windows 2000 supports FAT32 and FAT32 partition can be created using the Fdisk.exe from Windows 98 boot disk before installation as well.
